Law360 Recognizes HS Post University Verdict Among 2026’s Biggest Copyright Rulings

Harris St. Laurent LLP’s $75.3 million jury verdict for Post University continues to earn national recognition, with Law360 naming the case one of the biggest copyright cases of 2026 at the half-year mark.

In its midyear report, the publication highlighted both the record-setting amount of the award under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), along with the verdict's potential implications for the next wave of copyright litigation involving artificial intelligence.

The March verdict followed a nine-day trial in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut against Learneo Inc., operator of the file-sharing platform Course Hero. After 14 hours of deliberation, the jury found Learneo liable for thousands of violations of the DMCA involving the removal or replacement of copyright management information from Post University’s academic materials. Jurors awarded the maximum statutory damages of $25,000 per violation, totaling more than $75.3 million.

In its analysis, Law360 noted that few DMCA cases proceed to trial or result in multimillion-dollar verdicts. The article also highlighted commentary that the decision could set an important precedent for the growing number of AI-related copyright disputes, as many of those cases include claims under Section 1202 of the DMCA.

The Law360 recognition adds to the attention the verdict has received since trial. The win was previously named a runner-up in Law.com’s Litigation Daily Litigator of the Week and has been covered by Reuters, Bloomberg Law and other national and regional publications.
